A Day in the Life in the Oil and Gas Industry

August 2, 2023
  • Early to rise: The day starts early in the morning, usually around 4 or 5 a.m. The team gathers and gets geared up for a day in the field.
  • Safety first: Before any work gets done, safety is a top priority for the team. They go through a daily safety briefing to reiterate any hazards that may come with the particular job site.
  • Constant communication: Each team member is in constant communication with each other, the operation manager, the customer's drilling and completion team to avoid any mishaps and ensure the smooth running of the fluids recovery process.

The workload.

Working for an oil and gas company can sound like a daunting task, but have you ever wondered about the people behind the scenes of such companies like Trilogy? Today we’ll take a closer look at the team who provides on flowback services at the company and see what their day-to-day operations look like.

Every role is a crucial role in the company's operation.

The team providing flowback services at Trilogy has a crucial role in the company's operation. They ensure that the oil and gas are extracted correctly and efficiently by overseeing the flow of fluids from the reservoir to the surface. Typically, their day starts with a safety briefing, which includes going over the safety procedures and protocols to maintain safety on the job site.

Once the safety briefing is complete, the team sets up their equipment, which includes a truck-mounted separator, tanks, and a portable flare. The separator is used to separate oil, water, and gas, while the tanks store the fluids temporarily. The flare is used to burn off excess gas, which cannot be taken to the storage tanks for safety reasons.

Monitoring the separator and tanks is the next step. Throughout the day, the team continuously checks and measures the fluid levels in the tanks, file reports, and analyze data. Faulty equipment can quickly disrupt the flowback operation, and the team works to fix any issues as soon as they arise.

After a day of monitoring and recording data, the team then packs up their equipment, ensuring that everything is securely fastened and within safety protocols, and then they head back to their base. Once back at their base, they transfer their data and reports to the appropriate departments and prepare for the next day.

Safety first.

Outline of Day & Responsibilities

  • Early to rise: The day can start early in the morning and go late, usually around 4 or 5 a.m.
  • Rig preparation: Once everyone is geared up and safety measures are taken, the team sets up the flow line from the wellhead to the equipment van.
  • Testing time: After the processes are set up, it's time for the team to initiate testing. They observe the flow rates, pressures, and fluid composition to ensure that the well returns at an optimal rate and that the fracking fluids are separated correctly.
  • Analyzing the fluids: The team uses field-specific tools to analyze the fluids recovered. Through analysis, they can provide engineering teams with critical data on the quality of fluids used in fracking to make adjustments for better production in the future.
  • Documentation: Every data point collected during a flowback job is recorded. This data provides the baseline to compare past and present well performance.
  • End of the day: Once the flow rates have reached a satisfactory level, the well may be turned over to the customer's team. The flowback team will then inspect their equipment, safety measures, and ensure everything is clean and disconnected correctly.
  • Cleaning up: Proper disposal of the fluids recovered and equipment clean-up is just as crucial as the testing itself. The team ensures that the job site is left in a safe and clean manner for the environment and anyone visiting the location.
  • Reflection and housekeeping: Upon finishing a job, the team reflects on what was accomplished, areas of improvement, and any safety concerns. The team then analyzes their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure that it is in top condition and ready for the next job.

Working in the oil and gas industry isn't for everyone, but it's an exciting field. The flowback team at Trilogy plays a vital role in ensuring that the company’s operations run smoothly. Their day-to-day activities require a high level of precision, attention, and concern for safety. Those who love a challenging and dynamic work environment will find this role highly rewarding.
